The Green Book

WHAT IS THE GREEN BOOK?

The Green Book was introduced to the world of professional golf at the Scottish Open in July 2015. Ricky Fowler used the book to win the tournament and 6 of the top 10 players were using the Green Book.

At our second European Tour event we provided books for Danny Willet and Mathew Fitzpatrick who finished 1st and 2nd respectively at the Omega European Masters. We have since provided books for the winners of 5 further events on the European Tour including Thomas Peiters (two wins), Thor Bjorn Ollesen, David Horsey and of course Mathew Fitzpatrick at the British Masters.

HOW IS THE GREEN BOOK MADE?

The book is made using laser and GPS survey data which enables us to model the green surface to 1/2 millimetre accuracy. We then use our specialist Clere software which turns the GPS survey data and 3D model into drawings designed to help golfers understand the green and surrounding area.

HOW IS THE BOOK USED?

PUTTING

  • Which way is the ball breaking?
Detailed knowledge of the slopes will make for better judgement of the correct line to the hole.
  • Is the putt uphill or downhill?
Accurate measurements of surface rises and falls will help judgement of pace. How much is the ball breaking? How do I know what line I have to the hole?

APPROACH SHOTS

  • Knowing the slopes around the green in detail will enable accurate planning of approach shots.
  • How much will the shot release after ‘pitching’?
Using slope information in the landing zone.
  • Which side of the pin is best to putt from?
Using slope information in the area surrounding the hole
  • Where is the best miss?
Using slope information on the whole green and surrounding area to plan worst case scenarios.

CHIPPING AND PITCHING

  • What is the line to the pin from various landing areas?
Reading the line of short approach shots is just as important as when putting – but especially with pitch shots where often you can’t easily get onto the green to study the lines before making your shot.

CLUB EDITION

Now available for the first time at your golf course. The ‘Club Edition’ Green Book helps amateur golfers read putts more quickly and accurately and by doing so speeds up the pace of play.

As golfers we all want to play like the professionals we see on television or at the very least gain a taste of what it would be like to be one for a 18 holes. The ‘Club Edition’ takes a crucial tool used by players every week and places it in the hands of every golfer in a format that is simple to understand.

VALDERRAMA – HOST OF THE 1997 RYDER CUP

Keen to deliver visitors and members with the ultimate golfing experience, the team at Valderrama are huge fans of The Green Book. Offering something a little unique which adds value was of particular interest and certainly so when the green complexes as Valderrama can a quite tricky to say the least!

This version of our Green Book features a 2nd (top) page which is ideally suited to approach shots providing golfers with pinpoint accurate distances from the front of the green to key features around the green.

Furthermore, additional detail has been added to the main green illustration such as % fall numbers (something we usually show only on our tour books) which provide precise information of the exact steepness of a slope at that point. For example 10% = a 10mm fall in height over 1m. This really is tour level information.

ROYAL ABERDEEN – HOST OF THE 2014 SCOTTISH OPEN

A true test of links golf with challenging greens. Royal Aberdeen like many of our customers receive a huge number of visitors from the UK and oversees and so continually strive to find something to provide them which hasn’t been seen before.

The chosen Green Book is similar in layout to Valderrama with the top page displaying the information a player needs when considering an approach shot, the difference here however lies in the main green illustration.

The main green graphic does not include the % fall numbers and instead keeps a simpler view for the golfer ensuring putts are read with speed and precision.

TOURNAMENT EDITION

TOURNAMENT EDITION – THE GREEN BOOK

Since our first books were used on tour we have been striving to improve our product. Week after week we’ve been making improvements based on the feedback from players and hours of testing and research.

The Green Book reflects the fact that different players have different green reading techniques and so we offer a range of different types of books.

For example – some players use or are familiar with putting systems like AimPoint or have just practiced using percentage fall information. These players are better able To understand slope with these percentage numbers and so there are versions with these numbers present.

Other players don’t want or use this numbered information and prefer the ‘cleaner look’ of a book without numbers

Other players want more detailed information and we do a book for them with more arrows especially in the flatter areas.
